About Us

The Van Horn Family

Van Horn Imports was born in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, but our story begins long before that - across oceans and cultures.

Founded in 2024:

We're a family-run, veteran owned business, fueled by passion and a love for the grape. Our journey started when we decided to adopt our son, David, from the country of Georgia in 2005.  Little did we know that this adoption would lead us to a lifelong love of Georgian culture, people and, of course, wines!

From Military Service to Wine Dreams:

After dedicating 25 years in the United States Air Force and 11 years in the natural gas industry, we hung up the uniform and corporate lifestyle, and set our sights on a new mission: sharing the magic of Georgian wine with our fellow Texans.

Wine 101

Wine bottles stored

Nurturing Your Bottles

Temperature Matters

  • Goldilocks Zone- Keep your wine in a place with a consistent temperature (around 55 degrees F or 13 degrees C
  • Avoid Sunlight- Sun's UV rays can prematurely age wine. Store bottles away from direct sunlight.

Humidity Control

  • Humidity level- Aim for 60-70% humidity. Too dry and corks shrink; too damp and mold can grow.
  • Cork Health- Proper humidity prevents corks from drying out, maintaining a tight seal.

Horizontal Position

  • Lay 'Em Down- Store wine bottles horizontally. This keeps the cork
  • moist and prevents air from seeping in.

Vibration-Free Zone

  • Peace and Quiet- Avoid storing wine near appliances or areas with frequent vibrations. Vibrations disturb the aging process.

No Odor Interferences

  • Odor-Free Environment- Wine absorbs smells. Keep it away from strong odors (like cleaning supplies or spices).

Choose the Right Rack

  • Wine Racks- Invest in a sturdy wine rack. Wooden or metal racks work well. Label each slot for easy access.

Short-Term vs Long-Term Storage

  • Short-Term- For wines you plan to drink soon, store them in a cool, dark place.
  • Long-Term- If you're aging wine, consider a professional wine cellar or a specialized wine fridge.

Keep it Still

  • No Shaking- Once you've placed a bottle, avoid moving it unnecessarily. Let it rest.

REMEMBER, EACH BOTTLE HAS A STORY- GIVE IT THE PERFECT HOME! CHEERS!

Wine & Food Harmony

A Flavor of Dance

Saperavi Red with Khachapuri

  • Wine- Saperavi, the robust red wine of Georgia
  • Food Pairing- Dive into a slice of khachapuri, a cheesy Georgian bread boat. The wine's dark fruit flavors complement the gooey cheese and savory dough. It's like a cozy hug for your taste buds.

Rkatsiteli White with Lobio Salad

  • Wine- Rkatsitei, a crisp, white wine
  • Food Pairing- Try this with a refreshing lobio salad, made with kidney beans, herbs, and a zesty dressing. The wine's acidity balances the earthiness of the beans, creating a harmonious combo.

Amber Wines with Georgian Cuisine

  • Wine- Amber wines (aka orange wines)
  • Food Pairing- Explore traditional Georgian dishes. Think chicken chakhokhbili, eggplant pkhali, or chakapuli (lamb stew). The wines' tannins and texture play well with these hearty flavors.

Kisi Amber with Walnut Churchkela

  • Wine- Kisi Amber
  • Food Pairing- End your meal with a sweet treat; walnut churchkhela. These grape juice infused walnut candies pair beautifully with Kisi's nutty and honeyed notes.

REMEMBER, WINE & FOOD ARE DANCE PARTNERS- EACH STEP ENHANCES THE OTHER. SO SWIRL, SIP, AND SAVOR!
